RTX – it’s on?

On Nvidia models’ side we should also consider the availability of the ray tracing technology. In the last year, several more games have emerged that support it to some extent, including Control, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Minecraft. However, the list is still rather small, and the loss of performance remains large. Still we decided to check the situation in the 3 games used in this test, that support RT techniques – Shadow of the Tomb Rider, Battlefield V and Metro: Exodus. In the first one all cards were tested without DLSS and with RT Shadows on Ultra. In the 2 other games DLSS was enabled with the exception of 2080, and again ray-tracing effects were on Ultra.

In general, the first really usable RT enabled card on Nvidia’s list is the GeForce RTX 2070 Super. The RTX 2060 Super can only pass for conditionally usable if the lower frames are not a problem. RTX 2060, on the whole is rather useless for max-setting gameplay with RTX, so you either need to lower settings or just be content with a brief glimpse on what the technology offers. But if it’s only for a glimpse, you can also use any card from GeForce GTX 1060 and above. Finally, even with GeForce RTX 2080, there will still be games where you can’t bring in high enough frames without DLSS.

So for the time being, RTX remains an emerging technology that’s an interesting extra, but it’s still a long way from being a deal breaker to heavily tilt the scales in favor of Nvidia.
